How We Test
Our Fit-First Methodology
We evaluate thermostats from the HVAC outward—because comfort, savings, and reliability start with compatibility. Each review produces a Fit Score that weights what matters most in the field: safe equipment control, a clean install, and long‑term ecosystem fit.
Test Stages
- System Mapping
- Identify supported HVAC types: heat pump (air/water), furnace + AC, boiler/radiant, baseboard, mini‑split interfaces, and multi‑zone panels.
- Verify terminal support (Y1/Y2, W1/W2, G, O/B, AUX/E, L, RH/RC) and common wire requirements or adapter paths.
- Install Path and Wiring
- Build photo-driven install steps on live rigs and donor systems.
- Validate trim coverage, wall plate fit, and renter‑safe, reversible options.
- Confirm correct O/B polarity, staging, compressor protection, and aux heat lockouts.
- Platform and Local Control
- Test Matter/HomeKit/Google/Alexa onboarding, including edge cases (dual-band Wi‑Fi, captive portals).
- Verify local control and cloud-failure behavior (schedule retention, manual overrides, safe defaults).
- Energy and Comfort Scenarios
- Heat pump optimization: balance setpoints, defrost impacts, and aux minimization.
- TOU automations: preheating/precooling efficacy vs. comfort and runtime.
- Room sensors: occupancy-aware scheduling, comfort balance across zones/rooms.
- Utility Programs and Rebates
- Check model eligibility, required certifications, and enrollment steps for major utilities by region.
- Validate demand response controls: clear notifications, easy opt-out, and post-event recovery.
- Privacy & Data Use
- Map data flows (what’s collected, default sharing, opt‑out controls).
- Confirm no subscription is required for core functions where advertised.
- Durability & Support
- Assess build quality, firmware cadence, release notes clarity, warranty terms, and customer support responsiveness.
The Fit Score (Weighting)
- HVAC compatibility and safety: 40%
- Install clarity and renter‑safe options: 20%
- Platform reliability and local control: 10%
- Energy program fit (rebates, DR): 15%
- Privacy and data controls: 10%
- Warranty/support: 5%
Scores are explained in plain language with callouts for must‑know constraints (e.g., “requires C-wire or adapter,” “not for multi‑zone panels,” “no local schedules”).
Independence and Integrity
- No paid placement. We do not accept compensation to change scores or conclusions.
- Samples: When manufacturers provide units, we disclose it and apply the same tests. Loaned units do not leave our lab without a full wipe and factory reset.
- Reproducibility: We publish wiring photos, test conditions, and firmware versions so our results can be replicated.
Updates
Thermostats improve through firmware and standards (Matter, new utility integrations). We revisit key models after major updates and amend ratings with a changelog so you know what changed and why.
